TLS Weight Loss Solution Classes

Wednesdays from 6:30pm to 8:00pm @Mrs. Sippy’s at 12862 W Bluemound Rd. Elm Grove.

Transitions Lifestyle System® is a complete weight management system that encompasses low-glycemic eating, maintaining optimal body composition (muscle vs. fat) and behavior modification (creating healthy life-long habits).

TLS Weight Loss Solution Classes offer support for everyone, whether you are new to the program, are well on your way to your goal weight, or if you have reached your goals with TLS and want to continue to maintain.

TLS Classes offer information and training on how to prepare low-glycemic impact meals based on a 40:30:30 ratio of daily calories obtained from carbohydrates, proteins, and favorable fats, respectively. By achieving this balance, the body is able to maintain a hormonal balance promoting stable blood sugar levels, increased energy and weight loss.

Unlike traditional diets, which restrict the intake of many types of food, the TLS System allows you to eat your favorite foods as long as they are prepared with the 40:30:30 ratio.

Classes are held each Wednesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:00pm at Mrs. Sippy’s at 12862 W Bluemound Rd. Elm Grove, WI. There is no cost to attend. Participants may choose to purchase the supplements to enhance their weight loss, but it is not required to participate.

Come learn from Debbie Pias, RN how you can make simple changes to your diet to manage diabetes, lose weight, and live a healthier lifestyle.

Please RSVP to Debbie at 262-662-9774. Bring along someone you care about and join us next Wednesday.

Diabetic Care – Sleep Apnea

Today I want to talk about something that goes along with your diabetes and obesity. It is sleep apnea. We are pretty familiar with diabetes and obesity but what is this sleep apnea? Apnea is the Greek word for loss of breath. We normally call it snoring but it’s much more sinister than that; much worse than keeping your partner up all night. It causes serious complications within your body and makes treatment of your diabetes even more difficult. It is deadly to those of us in Wisconsin. Remember Reggie White star of the Green Bay Packers and Super Bowl champion? He actually died from sleep apnea. Some reports say that as many as 80% of diabetics will have sleep apnea and that a full 30% may go undiagnosed, this is a very dangerous situation.

Here’s what I recommend. First gather information. Google is a good place to start. Consult your healthcare professional if you think there’s any chance you may have sleep apnea. I can say from personal experience that the testing and treatment is a relatively simple process. You spend the night in a sleep clinic and they monitor you for the symptoms of sleep apnea. At that point if you have apnea they will probably recommend a machine that will put constant pressure on your airway to relieve the snoring. It’s not bad once you get used to it and after you’re used to it, you will not go to bed without it. Immediately you will notice the difference, with way more energy and you will not feel tired all day. Another good thing about treatment is that most insurance companies pay for the machine. That’s good news because it’s a rather expensive out-of-pocket item if you have to go that route. The next thing you will notice (hopefully) is better numbers on your blood sugar tests. Some studies also indicate this may help your blood pressure return to normal and improve your outlook on life.

So the moral of the story is; if you have diabetes and are overweight, feel tired and sore a lot, you may want to get tested for sleep apnea and that should help you live a longer healthier more productive life.

Let me know if this information was helpful to you or anything else you’d like to know about diabetes, healthy living, and how you manage your diabetes.

Treat yourself well!

More to come this week on sleep apnea including a video with Shaquille O’neal.

Today we’re flying out to Charlotte North Carolina for a Market America convention.

I’m quite familiar with the area around Milwaukee’s airport, and recently I saw a sign for a Suburbia submarine sandwich shop right across the street from the airport so that was my first target. I like Suburbia for submarine sandwiches because they use they have a rye bread and they use of vinegar and oil dressing on it which is good for low Glycemic aspect because the vinegar slows the digestion down and that’s what we’re looking for.

Unfortunately, that store was not open today so I chose Plan B; Oakland Gyro’s. I’ve been here several times before so I’m familiar with the menu choices. Today my choice was 1/2 pound Gyro meat with a side of onions and tomato. This order also included the famous cucumber sauce so familiar to Gyro lovers. I was smart enough to ask for my meat on a plate instead of in the basket with the tissue paper and I must say that I learned that from experience. This was one of my favorite places nearby the airport for lunch and it didn’t let me down. From the Glycemic/diabetic eating standpoint it was a great meal. The meat is lean pure protein with onions and tomatoes or vegetables that are always good. If there was anything suspect it would have been the cucumber sauce but that wasn’t overly sweet so not really a concern. I think the main trick in this meal was not to order the pita that the sandwich would normally be served with. They have several other menu choices that may have made the low Glycemic cut but this is kind of a favorite and I treated myself today. I finished his meal off with my traditional glass of ice water would slice of lemon and I have to thank them for having the lemon slices readily available.

Being that this was a Greek flavored establishment, I think he could’ve had maybe some Mediterranean soup that might have some benefit to the millions of diabetic and low Glycemic people. I think they also could be offer a high-fiber flour tortilla like mission or some of the other brands that we recommend to make that sandwich taste good and still be low Glycemic friendly. I’m certainly not complaining about the menu selections here because they have plenty of things that would be acceptable to our low Glycemic diet and diabetic friendly. I would have to caution that the fried delicacies are probably not such a good choice and I would stay away from them….just because of the breading and fried components. So all in all I have to thank Oakland Gyro’s in Milwaukee Wisconsin for being diabetic and low Glycemic friendly.

Protein has several different functions as related to muscles which include building, growth and repair. Increase in muscle mass assists in fat burning, weight loss and diabetes control.

Whey protein is the byproduct of cheese production and is the highest quality type protein available. Whey also aids in the increased level of concentration, and attention as well as promotes a healthy immune system. The proper consumption of whey can reduce blood sugar levels, lower food cravings, increase energy and help with weight loss which is a key component in the management of diabetes.

Casein protein assists in muscle maintenance. Muscle breakdown occurs on a regular basis which results in decreased strength and increased fat storage, weight gain and struggles with diabetes. Casein protein is slowly released as amino acids into the blood stream for up to seven hours, until completely digested and assists in the decrease of muscle breakdown and soreness following exercise.

Using protein supplements following exercise can assist with the replacement of protein loss and better management of muscle growth and repair.

Food consumption of protein generally focuses on lean meat, poultry or fish and as related to diabetes and weight loss can be instrumental in the management of carbohydrate breakdown and fat storage.

Leptin is a protein produced by cells. When leptin levels are within a normal range the brain sends signals to the body to stop eating and prevents storage of extra calories as fat.

Overweight people tend to have higher than normal levels of leptin known as leptin resistance causing the brain to become desensitized and preventing the body to stop eating beyond levels of feeling full, which may lead to obesity and diabetes. These increased leptin levels can also make the brain believe it is in a constant state of starvation. This process results in food cravings and weight gain and fat storage.

So consuming lower carbohydrate foods such as fruits and vegetables instead of high carbohydrate foods such as white potatoes, white bread, pasta, white rice and flour based sauces, soups and gravy’s we can reduce an overabundance of sugar that becomes stored as fat.

As weight reduction occurs energy levels tend to increase and fatigue lessens and the next important step to weight loss can more easily be achieved, which is exercise.

Exercise will help in the reduction of sugar levels and fat storage. Explore different options for exercise by starting out slow and increasing at your own pace. Parking in the farthest part of the lot when shopping to add a quick 10 minute walk to your day. When watching your favorite TV show, take the time between programming to do a set of pushups or sit ups. Use the stairs instead of the elevator.

Research in Leptin is still in its infancy. I recommend asking your doctor about testing your leptin levels and what possible supplements and therapies are available in your battle with obesity and diabetes.
